The visit of the Dutch star footballer Memphis Depay last Monday to the favela Jardim Santa Cristina in São Paulo has made a big impression, as ESPN Brasil  notes a few days later.

The Dutch forward of Corinthians took the time to talk to the inhabitants of the slum and eventually paid the bar bill for the community. “His visit was great for us,” said Dona Sirley, a resident.

Memphis had extra free time due to the break in the Brazilian football calendar and decided to pay a visit to a slum. “It means a lot to us,” said Alessandro Nunes, a resident of Jardim Santa Cristina.

Alessandro is happy with Memphis’ attitude. “A very modest, simple boy. It was like he was someone from our community the way he played with the kids,” said the resident.

Memphis had his hair braided outside on a staircase in the neighborhood, while dozens of fans were watching. Earlier this week, the images of this were circulated very quickly on social media.

Memphis was there together with the artists MC Hariel and Febem, who recorded footage for a new music video with the 98-time Dutch international. The music of the new song was also recorded in a studio in São Paulo.

The community was allowed to drink at Memphis’ expense on Monday night. At the end of the evening, the ex-PSV player paid the bar bill worth 7,000 Brazilian real, converted to more than 1,100 euros. Memphis didn’t leave until night had already fallen.

“He left everything in his account,” says one resident. “He said, ‘You can empty the bar and I’ll pay for everything.’ Our doors are always wide open if he wants to return.”
